When the nerve or blood supply (known as the pulp) has been infected, you’ll need root canal treatment.
Symptoms of an infection can include pain, sensitivity to temperature, discolouration, tender gums, a metallic taste or swelling.
Also known as endodontics, root canal treatment involves removing the infected nerve and bacteria from the tooth. If caught early, root canal treatment can prevent removing a tooth.
What happens during root canal treatment?
We first take an x-ray to assess the root canals. Once we know where to treat, we use a sheet to keep the affected tooth dry. Under local anaesthetic, we remove the infected pulp. The canal is then cleaned and shaped to prevent any further infection. We place a temporary filling to protect the tooth.
The root canal filling is then completed at the next appointment. A permanent filling would also be required. In some cases, you may need a crown.
We have a qualified endodontist specialist on our team. You can book an appointment with our specialist, Federico, who can give you a thorough examination and advise you on the next steps of your treatment. Most courses of treatment can involve two or more visits.
